The STEP2 lecture on university governance and management was conducted as follows.

Date: Friday, October 10, 2025, 10:30–12:00
Location: Ito Guest House, Ito Campus, Kyushu University
Lecturer: Professor Margaret Leinen, Former Vice Chancellor, University of California San Diego (UC San Diego)

On Friday, October 10, STEP2 lecture on university governance and management was held for the 7th term trainees of SENTAN-Q.

We welcomed Professor Margaret Leinen, who served as the 11th Director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego from July 2013 to September 2025, to the Ito Campus for an in-person, discussion-based lecture.

During the lecture, Professor Leinen reflected on her professional journey as a researcher and shared her perspectives on leadership. She emphasized that leading a global research institution requires not only having a clear vision but also the ability to communicate that vision effectively and to guide students, colleagues, and the organization as a whole. She also discussed the importance of supporting team members as a mentor and of effective communication in fostering a strong, collaborative team.

Trainees commented that they "reaffirmed that leadership is not only about one’s research achievements but also about promoting the growth of the entire organization" and that they were "impressed by the idea that giving students opportunities to fail contributes to the development of the team."

This lecture provided a valuable opportunity to reflect on the essence of leadership in university governance and research management.
