On Friday, October 16, we conducted the STEP2 lecture on University Governance and Management for the 8th term trainees of SENTAN-Q program.

We held a lecture by Dr. Peek-Asa, who has served as Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation at the University of California San Diego (UC San Diego) since 2022, followed by a discussion with our trainees.

In the lecture on the organizational structure and management roles that support research and innovation at UC San Diego, Dr. Peek-Asa discussed the functions of various departments regarding research funding acquisition and management, support for research projects funded by external sources, and research compliance and integrity. She also presented examples of successful efforts to secure high-value research grants and of university-spun-off startups. Through these examples, the participants gained a deeper understanding of the role that effective governance and management play in supporting research activities and fostering innovation.

Through this training, participants gained a deeper understanding of the governance and management frameworks that support the promotion of research and innovation at universities. They also gained insights into strengthening the university’s organizational capacity for research promotion, the societal implementation of research outcomes, and the future development of research activities and international collaboration.
